Garden Carpet - Charlotte Douglas International Airport
Garden Carpet
When I first saw Charlotte 30 years ago, the beauty of its physical environment amazed me. It was springtime with the dogwoods, azaleas, and camellias in bloom. Similarly, when I began designing Garden Carpet in March of 2020 at the very beginning of the COVID lockdown, spring was in full bloom in Charlotte, providing a much-needed contrast to what was going in the world. So, for this floor, I decided to celebrate the area’s profusion of flowers and its culture of gardening. I set out to recreate the feeling of being in a floral paradise and aimed to create a space that brings joy to visitors as they enter and leave the airport ticketing area. I want this floor to provide a colorful but calming effect for travelers. The title, Garden Carpet, comes from a style of Persian carpets that dates all the way back to the 1600s.
The work was installed by a team from the David Allen Co. They poured 24 different colors of epoxy terrazzo between metal divider strips to make this floor. Garden Carpet, is viewable at the west mezzanine in the terminal lobby at the Charlotte, NC airport. Thank you ASC, Charlotte Public Art Commission, and the CLT Airport for this opportunity. Thank you David Allen Co. for your work.
